Workshop 2: Voice and Group singing

Workshop 2: Voice and Group singing

This workshop will be the second of the programme, by which point the group already know each other after a semester working together, and where they’ve been able to build group dynamics of trust that allow them to explore the potential of their voice. Through expert musicians and experienced educators, they will have the opportunity to feel like part of a group, experiment with their voices and experience music in a direct and active way. Various studies have reported the psychological and social benefits of being part of a choir, in relation to self perception of loneliness. Other previous studies have shown the effect that singing has on cortisol levels, emotional state and cognitive improvements in illnesses such as dementia or Alzheimers and also brain damage.

Using the voice as the main instrument for expression, language and singing have been stimulated using a methodology that includes movement, play and surprise. A number of formats have been used: with musical accompaniment, a cappella, with recorded music, with a microphone and group improvisations. Different types of music and songs have been brought to the workshops – some well known to the participants, others heard previously through the programme and some new, to work the involuntary cognitive processes involved in learning, the development of language and memorisation. The main catalogue used has been traditional songs, folk music, pop music, world music, lullabies or songs that are related to memories of childhood or relevant historic moments. Listen to some of the songs that were used:
